About UMR

Shaping Future Clinicians Through Research Excellence

The Undergraduate Medical Research (UMR) department at Peshawar Medical College is committed to embedding ethical research and scientific inquiry into undergraduate medical education.

About UMR

Nurturing Research Excellence from the Undergraduate Level

At Peshawar Medical College, Peshawar Dental College, and Rufaidah Nursing College, we hold a foundational belief in the transformative power of health research to improve lives and healthcare systems. Our journey began in 2006 with the admission of our first MBBS class, where we integrated structured research education with hands-on, experiential learning. From developing their own scientific proposals to conducting and analyzing simple studies, our students have been active architects of their research experience. Our pioneering efforts under the unwavering leadership of Prof. Dr. Najeeb Ul Haq culminated in the successful establishment of this department and the organization of the First Annual Undergraduate Medical Reseach Conference in 2007. The event featured 23 poster presentation by first, a second year MBBS students. Today, this initiative has blossomed into a major annual conference, attracting participants from our own institution national & international medical and allied health institutes.

Our program continues to evolve. As pioneers to implement research curriculum, we offer third-year MBBS students a dedicated 3-week rotation in our Undergraduate Medical Research department, focusing intensively on research ethics, advanced skills, and proposal development. Under the expert supervision of qualified faculty from basic, clinical, and social sciences, every student’s project is rigorously developed and must receive approval from our Ethical Review Committee.

We further guide and support our students in publishing their completed work. Through the combined efforts of our students, faculty, and administration, we are dedicated to establishing an ethical and professional research culture for the scientists of tomorrow.

Our Mission

To foster an enabling environment of creativity and excellence in undergraduate health sciences research, enabling students to contribute meaningfully to societal well-being and the evolution of medical practice.

Our Vision

To cultivate excellent researchers who will advance the frontiers of Health sciences research.

Our Moto

Rigorous in Research. Principled in Practice. Excellence with Integrity

Research & Academic Framework

The Undergraduate Medical Research (UMR) program follows a structured academic framework designed to introduce students to the fundamental principles and practice of medical research. From early exposure to research concepts to hands-on project execution, students are guided through each stage of the research process in a supportive learning environment.

Structured Research Training

Students are introduced to core research concepts through organized lectures and practical sessions, covering literature review, methodology, data collection, and basic data analysis.

Hands-on Learning

Under expert guidance, students convert research ideas into ethically approved studies, gaining real-world experience in scientific inquiry and evidence-based practice.

The Undergraduate Medical Research Department Report

The UMR department fosters a research culture among undergraduate medical and dental students by integrating research introductory classes into the curriculum for 1st and 2nd year MBBS and 1st year BDS students. An intensive research rotation is conducted with 3rd year MBBS and 2nd year BDS students, comprising small group discussions, case-based learning, and practical exercises. Students develop and present a research proposal at the end of their rotation. The 4th & 5th year MBBS and 4th Year BDS are taught advance topic in research to enhance their research skills and guide for publication.
The UMR department engages students in research activities throughout the year. An annual call for proposals encourages students to develop research ideas, choose a supervisor, and submit proposals to the UMR department. Proposals are reviewed for ERC requirements and approved by the ERC chairperson. The UMR department facilitates the research process, ensuring a smooth experience for students, supervisors, and ERC. Upon receiving their ERC certificate, students are guided to initiate research, collect and analyze data, and present their study at the annual Research Conference.
The UMR Department and the UMR Student Society jointly organize the annual research conference. The UMR society plays a vital role in the conference preparation, with its members working diligently each year to ensure the event's success.

The UMR Department's growth and development are attributed to the visionary leadership of its directors and the dedicated efforts of the UMR Student Society presidents. The following is a progress of the UMR department and UMR conferences taking place each year:
